Soundings

Soundings (in production). Feature length film & audio-visual installation. 2026

An audio-visual installation that documents one of the last remaining "quiet places" in the world's oceans off the coast of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The project observes the fieldwork of scientists from the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at Cornell University, The Universidad de Concepción, Chile and Rapa Nui conservation organizations (Manu Project, Koro Nui O Te Vaikava) as they work together on a long-term acoustic survey of the natural sounds of one of the last pristine underwater sonic environments in the worlds largest marine protected area encompassing 278,000 square miles. The work explores the forefront of a new reciprocal collaborative approach to marine conservation between citizen science, communities, and scientific institutions, the effect of anthropogenic noise (acoustic smog) on marine species, and how conservation bioacoustics as a discipline deals with uncertain environmental futures.
